The Nigerian, who started with 55.82 meters, knew she would need more than her 58.19 meters to win the gold medal at the African Championships held in Mauritius last June. She attempted to rebound unsuccessfully in the second round with a throw of 56.42 meters, fouled the third attempt, and then swung the discus to a personal season’s best mark of 61.70 meters, which is her second-best career throw after the 63.30 meters personal best she threw at the CVEATC, Chula Vista in California, USA, last year.

Obiageri Amaechi, the defending champion from Nigeria, won the bronze medal with a throw of 56.99 meters in the fifth round, adding to Team Nigeria’s already significant history by delivering two medalists in the Discus Throw competition. After Adewale Olukoju, Onyekwere is now the second Nigerian to ever win the Discus Throw title for Nigeria in the history of the competitions. Olukoju won in 1990’s Aukland with a throw of 62.62 meters.

Born on June 28, 1994, in Michigan, United States, Chioma is an American-born Nigerian track and field athlete. As mentioned above, she specializes in the discus throw. The athlete has completed the shotput and discus throw both on the collegiate level and internationally representing Nigeria. Onyekwere won her first collegiate medal in 2015 in Maryland’s first season in the Big Ten Conference. Later, in 2016, she capped off her final Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championship by earning a Silver Medal in the Weight Throw.
