Guys; nights out are great but, especially as we get older, there’s much to be said for guys’ nights in. A chance to catch up, share some drinks, play some games, have some laughs, and connect on our own terms

Today’s internet gives us great ways to stay social online: group chats, multiplayer games, or poker and online slots. These things are fantastic ways to maintain friendships, but sometimes there’s no substitute for getting everyone in a room together.

Every guys’ night in has a host, a role that presents an exciting opportunity but can also come with challenges. Knowing what activities to plan, what food and drink to organise, and what else needs doing, can be nerve-wracking.

Getting the guys round for drinks is one thing, but keeping them entertained for a whole night is another. On the other hand, nobody wants to overdo things, the whole point is for everyone to relax, right?

The balance is key, as is the preparation. With that in mind, here is our handy guide to hosting a great guys’ night in.

Do the prep

  1. Food

Don’t worry, we’ll get to the drinks, but first we need to make sure everyone is well fed. We’re not talking full dinner party, and it doesn’t need to be fancy, but it’s good to make an effort.

Play to your strengths, if you make a great chilli to throw in a slow cooker, that’s an ideal choice. If you have an outdoor space and it’s warm out, firing up the barbecue is a guys’ night classic.

Alternative ideas are charcuterie boards, for a quick meat fix, or other grazing style foods such as cheese or nachos. Takeaway is always an option if you have the budget, but your guests will appreciate something you made yourself.

    2. Drink

The important thing here is to play to the crowd, you know your friends and what they like to drink. A fridge or cooler stacked with beers is easy, but only if it’s to everyone’s taste.

Modern craft beers help bring this up a notch, and can create talking points as people try new things. Alternatively, your friends might be a wine crowd who would get a kick out of an interesting bottle or two.

Another option, that is often a standard at girls’ nights but gets forgotten by guys, is cocktails. With some quality liquor and research into mixers, bitters, and garnish, interesting cocktails can really add something to a night.

     3. Scene

To be clear here, we’re not talking about creating a prom-style “under the sea dance” situation. We’re just saying that you should look at the little things that will make the atmosphere better for your night.

Nobody wants to play poker under bright strip lights, or perch on overturned buckets because there aren’t enough chairs. Think about the activities for your night and make sure the room, or garden, is set up to host them.

The other thing a lot of guys forget to do is clean, tidy, and remove the debris of daily life. Any host should at least cover the basics, clean the bathroom and kitchen and make space by tidying away clutter.

Once the preparation is in place, it’s time to turn your attention to the most important thing – the activities. Drinking and chatting is fine, essential even, but most guys are activity centred so it’s important to have a focus.

Depending on the crowd, sports, games, and music are always good starting points, but some are better than others. For your guys’ night, there are a few easy winners you might want to consider.

Perhaps the most classic guys’ night activity of them all – cards, whiskey, cigars, and a chance to win some cash. Establish the game, make sure everyone knows the rules, set the scene, and a poker night can run until dawn.

Other card and casino games are also options but many find poker has a unique blend of skill and chance. With the growth of online casino, it’s easy to get some practice in before the night too.

Recent years have seen the board and card game industry boom like never before, especially for adults. A quick online search will reveal a whole world of new games designed specifically for adult players.

Some are more complex or longer-running than others, and themes vary greatly, so always cater for your audience. With a range from Cards Against Humanity to the classic D&D, there is now a game for every crowd.

The number of adults who immerse themselves in computer games on a regular basis is higher than ever. These can also provide a great focus for a guys night, and a chance to show off your tech.

Set up your console on the big TV, or a projector, then it’s just a matter of choosing your games. Sports games, battle games, anything competitive that doesn’t leave none-players idle for too long and you’re on to a winner.

Alternative options for activities include pool, sports – watching or playing – or perhaps cigar or liquor tasting sessions. The key is that everyone is involved and engaged and the activity allows you to bond, relax, and enjoy yourselves.

With a little thinking and a little prep, the formula for a successful night is easy. In general, consider your guests, make sure you’ve catered for their needs, and – most importantly – relax.

After all, you’re there to have fun too – and if the host is stressed, so is everyone else.
